Music – Organized Sound Evoking Emotions

What exactly is music?

Music is created by organizing sound. Sound is capable of generating emotions when it gets organized in certain musical patterns. Emotions are indeed the core foundation of human life which is why music is so important.

Building blocks of music include Rhythm, melodic phrases, Harmonic progressions. Sound includes Pitch, Timbre and Dynamics. Music emotions are dependent on melodic range, rhythm pattern and major, minor and other Chrod patterns.

Some characteristics of sound that are of interest to music are

Pitch: Pitch is essentially frequency of sound as perceived by an individual. Pitch makes a sound appear high or low.

Voice or Timbre: Timbre is what differentiates the sound of one instrument or a person from another.

Dynamics: Sound can be loud or soft reflecting various level of energy. This characteristic is referred as Dynamics

Sound gets organized using Rhythmic Patterns,  Melodic phrases and Harmonic progressions.

Different structures and patterns of sound produce different emotions. E.g. Happy piece of music is usually created with wide melodic range, consistent strong rhythm and major chords. A serious or sad kind of music is created with slow rhythm and minor chords commonly. These are simple illustrative examples. In reality there could be lot of exceptions to such rules. Music has the ability to address a very broad range of emotions.

In other words, simple rules and patterns of science applied in all sort of imaginative ways create magic!
